Andrea Rubboli, MD, FESC, Consultant Clinical Cardiologist and Senior Interventional Cardiologist at the Division of Cardiology, Ospedale Maggiore, Bologna, Italy, graduated from the University of Bologna Medical School in 1985 cum laude, and specialized in Cardiology at the same University in 1989 cum laude. Dr. Rubboli fulfilled further education as Research Fellow at the Loyola University of Chicago, Illinois, USA, and as staff Interventional Cardiologist at the Heart Center of the University of Linköping, Sweden. At present, Dr. Rubboli is a member of the Working Group on Thrombosis (WG 18) of the European Society of Cardiology, and of the European Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Intervention (EAPCI).
Dr. Rubboli has long been interested in the diagnosis and treatment of thrombotic and thromboembolic disease, both at the venous and arterial site. He carried out clinical studies on the diagnosis and treatment of acute pulmonary embolism, and in 2009-2010 has served as Chairman of the Working Group on Diseases of the Pulmonary Circulation of the Italian Association of Hospital Cardiologists (ANMCO). With his most recent research and clinical work, Dr. Rubboli pioneered the field of the management of patients with an indication for oral anticoagulation undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention with stent implantation. He was the promoter and coordinator of the international task force developing the first consensus paper on the management of patients on oral anticoagulation, mainly because of atrial fibrillation, undergoing coronary artery stenting. Being primarily an interventionalist, Dr. Rubboli is involved daily in the management of these patients, and is currently coordinating national and international initiatives devoted to identify the burden and the management of patients on oral anticoagulation undergoing coronary artery stenting. Owing to the expertise and international reputation gained in this field, Dr. Rubboli has promoted and participated in the development of further experts’ consensus documents, and is being invited to give lectures on this topic at important national and international meetings, including the European Society of Cardiology Congress and EuroPCR.
Dr. Rubboli has been awarded of several national prizes and research grants, and has authored or co-authored many publications in peer-reviewed journals. He is also a reviewer for several international journals, including The Lancet, Chest, Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions, American Journal of Cardiology, Thrombosis & Haemostasis, and Thrombosis Research. Dr. Rubboli is currently a member of the editorial board of the World Journal of Cardiology and a member of the editorial board and regional coordinator of the Journal of Geriatric Cardiology.
